The brain is fascinating, awe-inspiring and intimately linked to our lives. And yet…Neuroscience - the study of the brain and the rest of the nervous system - is rarely taught to kids before college. We think this is a missed opportunity, and one that we can do something about.
Children ages 7-11 are eagerly exploring the world around them and open to new subjects of inquiry. This is a great time to introduce them to the exciting science of the brain:
1) Children who understand how their brains work will be kids, and later adults, who better understand themselves and others. This can only be a good thing.
2) Children excited about neuroscience at a young age may be more likely to go into careers in neuroscience or other related sciences like biology, chemistry and physics, and grow up with a deeper curiosity about the world. This means more learning overall and faster technological progress. Again, this can only be a good thing.
We started Kizoom to do our part in increasing public understanding of the nervous system. There is no doubt that the near future will hold a lot for the brain sciences and we want to help create a generation that is knowledgeable and excited by that!
We also want to bring creativity and playfulness to science education. Our educational content will be integrated into fun stories about relatable neuron characters and games that bring the science to life.
Our first project, The Adventures of Ned the Neuron, is an interactive electronic story and activity book starring Ned (a neuron). While reading about Ned, his neuron and glial cell friends, and their adventures in the brain, children will learn what their brains are made of, that different parts of their brains do different things, and that neurons work together to help us sense the world around us and control our actions.
Achieving our funding goal of $25,000 will allow us to meet production costs for The Adventures of Ned the Neuron, such as original art and illustrations, voiceover recordings, and marketing and distribution, as well as providing a solid base for building out our future products.
Our long-term goal is to create an ecosystem of educational storybooks, games and activities that center around fun neuron characters and teach basic concepts about the nervous system.
This project is just the beginning of a world of great educational tools for kids.Help us get Ned and his friends out there into the world in a BIG way.
