Even Microsoft is jumping into the crowdfunding industry, in what seems to be a big way, at least if you are a student. Microsoft will help students crowdfund their laptop purchase by setting up a website: http://Windowschipin.com, and then subsidizing the first 10% of the purchase as well as throwing in some free software.

This is how "Chip In" works. It's rather simple:
1) Select your Windows PC.
2) Create your profile and ask your friends & family to contribute to your goal.
3) Fund your PC. Once you reach your goal, we’ll ship your new PC to you with Office 365 University included*. Remember: Windows has already contributed 10% off the PC cost.
Done and done.
