The other day we saw that CrowdCube.com, the equity crowdfunding platform from the U.K decided to expand to Italy, Spain and New Zealand. Well today news broke out of the U.K. again, this time concerning Seeders.com. Seedrs has decided to expanding across all of Europe. They will be the first platform to permit cross border funding. Someone in Italy can post a project in which someone in Belgium can invest into. This is a huge advantage for the company, which has already made a name for itself.

Here is their official email news on the topic:

Over the weekend, I told you we’d make two big announcements today.

One, as you know, is the launch of our own fundraising campaign. If you log onto Seedrs, you can see the campaign at seedrs.com/startups/seedrs or under Browse Campaigns. I hope you will take a look.

The other announcement is our big secret that has been months in the making: we are going Europe-wide! As of this morning, investors and entrepreneurs from across the European Union and several other European countries can join Seedrs, invest in any of the startups on the platform or seek to raise capital for their own startups. This makes us the first cross-border equity crowdfunding platform in the world, and it gives our users access to a significantly deeper pool of capital and investment opportunities than ever before.

I’m pleased that the press has found this news as exciting as we have. A sampling of today’s articles are below if you would like further information.

To me it appears Crowdcube and Seedrs will both be the big players in Europe. In the US, that one is still a wide open race, however Ourcrowd looks to be off to a decent start. It's going to be a very competitive landscape over the next 6-12 months, that's for certain!

The amount that can be raised differs across European states, so it should benefit UK based platforms in attracting campaigns because they are allowed to operate at the upper end of the cap.

Under European law, EU member states can allow the raising of up to €5 million ($6.8 million) through equity crowdfunding platforms – but they can also set the limit as low as €100,000, which many such as France still do. The UK set its cap at €5 million and, as that’s where Seedrs is based, that’s its limit across the EU.
