If you have not heard about Mars One in the past year then you have likely been living under a rock. Mars One is a new nonprofit company with a plan to land Humans on Mars by 2023. It's quite an incredible plan, and one that needs a ton of funding. In the past they had talked about possibly utilizing Crowdfunding as a means to finance some of the pre-launch projects they must complete. Well this morning they have officially launched an Indiegogo campaign, seeking $400,000 from the public in exchange for various rewards which range from autographed photos signed by the company executives, to photos that you can sent to the red planet. Within the first hour they have already taken in close to $5,000.

Private industry has made spaceflight more attainable and affordable (just look at Space X), it makes sense that eventually other aspects of space travel go private as well. Private industry creates more efficient, cost effective ways to get the job done whereas governments sometimes spend huge amount of tax payer dollars to fund white elephants.
This crowdfunding campaign is just the first step towards placing a man on mars but it may be an integral part. I hope that they make it - and I have a feeling that they will!
