Indiegogo today announced that they raised $40 million in a Venture capital round. The second largest crowdfunding platform in the world will likely use the funding to try and catch up to Kickstarter. It is also possible that they are looking to enter the equity crowdfunding market later this years once the SEC's new rules come out.

Here's some more info on the funding round:

but the gap between number two and number one is an estimated $514 million dollars in terms of total dollars raised for projects. That's a pretty big difference. I wonder what additions they will make to help narrow that gap.

I think the big one will be equity. They will go after the soon to blossom equity crowdfunding markets.

Wow, that's more than Kickstarter raised I believe.

Does anyone have any firm numbers on how much Kickstarter has raised through VC for comparison purposes? Looks like the big guy is finally going to get a run for his money - literally.
