Professional investors join the crowdfunding party
Crowdfunding has traditionally offered ordinary investors the chance to buy shares in unlisted companies — but now venture capital funds are muscling in.
Professional investors, including VC funds and corporate finance houses, provided equity to about 14 per cent of start-ups backed on crowdfunding websites in 2016, more than double compared with two years earlier, according to research company Beauhurst.
In separate figures, Crowdcube, the largest crowdfunding platform by deal volume, said the number of deals involving institutional investors alongside retail investors had quadrupled in the past two years.
