Give chance to the addicts in Macedonia.

We focus on building their future. We focus on building again their dreams. We focus on giving them second chance to leave free in 21st century.

.

In 2015 about a quarter of a billion people used drugs. Of these, around 29.5 million people – or 0.6 per cent of the global adult population – were engaged in problematic use and suffered from drug use disorders, including dependence. Opioids were the most harmful drug type and accounted for 70 per cent of the negative health impact associated with drug use disorders worldwide.

In Macedonia, there is no formal active grass roots organization of people who use drugs. In the past 50 years there have been two initiatives for establishing two new grass roots organizations. The first one resulted with the Macedonian Association of Drug Users (MADU), established in 2013, and the second initiative in 2006 with the organization Pasaž. The two instances were instigated by Healthy Options Project Skopje – HOPS. Even though MADU was never set in motion, Pasaž was formally registered and active for a certain period.

The lack of an active grass roots organization naturally limits people who use drugs in Macedonia to go on rehab, report a problem or seek for institution that can help.

People in Macedonia have no awareness, no courage, it is taboo and there is no freedom of thought, and lately people have been afraid to talk openly on this subject” – drug user from Macedonia, March 2014.

Faced with the reality in Macedonia, where people have drug issues that in many cases end up with death, we formed a fundraiser for supporting drug users and their families.

Our major goal is to inform people about their option. Their main option is that there is life after addiction, and that families should be educated and should be major support in the rehabilitation process.

What we faced in Macedonia as obstacles:

There are many legal issues about forming organization for drug users
Government does not fund NGO and so far has not supported a drug user’s organization
There are not available funds for rehab centres in Macedonia
There is only one rehab centre in Macedonia in Kavadarci
People can pay up to USD 50,00/daily for rehab centre participation due to financial situation in Macedonia and average salary in Macedonia
We will be responsible for this steps:

To provide education about drugs and their consequences in high schools in Macedonia
To educate parents that they are supporters and educators rather than people who classify drugs as taboo and report their children as schizophrenic
To prevent drug users to be sent to Mental hospital as schizophrenic (many drug users are in this hospital)
To advice drug users and their families about their options – in Macedonia and in another countries
To make connections with other Rehab centres in another countries and to visit them
To raise funds for REHAB centre near Skopje that can offer rehabilitation for Macedonians in their country
To prepare projects for donations in order to be active and fight addictions with Macedonians

Everything starter with our close friend who was in an addiction hell. When we finally convinced him that we are here for him, that he has options, and that only rehabilitation centre and professionals can help him, we faced even a bigger problem. He had 2 options:

– To go to the mental hospital, to be treated with amphetamine, and be classified as schizophrenic or

– His family to pay the higher cost for his help: to send him in another country where rehabilitation centres are available

The first option was even worst then taking drugs. The second one was extremely costly.

We helped financially and his family helped him too. That is how his story began. That is how we started vigorously to fight for others like him who need 3 things: a proper help and self-realization, family love and understanding, and rehabilitation centre.

We won’t let this project to fail since it is a taboo in our country. Some of the drug roads go through it, and a lot of the drug stays within.

Our key formula is strength, endurance, relevance and fight.

We All Need Second Chance.
