Ubuntu Edge Shatters All Indiegogo Records With Project

Wow! Canonical has just announced their Indiegogo project which has shatter the all time record for the most funded crowdfunding project on Indiegogo, and may even break the record held on Kickstarter for the Pebble Watch which is just over $10,000,000. They are seeking to raise $32 million for there all in one device that is a smartphone, and Desktop PC in one. The project launched just 12 hours ago and has already raised over $2.5 million from over 5000 people. This shatters all over crowdfunding records in the last 3 years.

If this doesn't show that crowdfunding is gaining steam in a big way nothing will. Any guesses as to how much they will bring in in the next 30 days? Will they hit their goal of $32 million?

Here is a snippet about the project:

    What is the Ubuntu Edge?

In the car industry, Formula 1 provides a commercial testbed for cutting-edge technologies. The Ubuntu Edge project aims to do the same for the mobile phone industry -- to provide a low-volume, high-technology platform, crowdfunded by enthusiasts and mobile computing professionals. A pioneering project that accelerates the adoption of new technologies and drives them down into the mainstream.

This beautifully crafted smartphone is a proving ground for the most advanced mobile technologies on the horizon, a showpiece for true mobile innovation. And at the heart of it all is convergence: connect to any monitor and this Ubuntu phone transforms into an Ubuntu PC, with a fully integrated desktop OS and shared access to all files.

We’re fascinated by converged computing, the idea that the smartphone in your pocket can also be the brain of the PC on your desk. We’ve shaped Ubuntu so you can transition seamlessly between the two environments. Now all that’s needed is a phone that’s designed from the ground up to be a PC as well.

The Ubuntu Edge is our very own superphone, a catalyst to drive the next generation of personal computing.

Unbelieveable! They are at over 10% of their goal in just over a day. $36 million and counting. Here is an update from the Canonical Team:
Ubuntu Edge: An amazing first day and a NEW perk
    Hi everyone
What an incredible 24 hours! At 4pm yesterday we introduced the Ubuntu Edge to the world, and we didn’t have to wait long to see the reaction. As the news coverage spread around the globe, that big green number just kept rising. And rising. And rising.
We hit $1 million in under five hours, and $2 million not long after that. We’ve now passed the 10% line, which shows just how much demand there is out there for the Edge’s radical new approach to mobile technology.

Thank you for all your support, both in backing the campaign and getting it out there for all to see - at one point yesterday our new baby was trending higher on Twitter than a certain royal one!
Today we’re adding a new perk: DOUBLE EDGE. As you can probably guess, this includes two Ubuntu Edge phones at the discounted rate of $1,400.
We’ll have plenty of updates over the coming weeks, taking you through the design and production of the Ubuntu Edge. To get us started, here’s a message from Canonical CEO Jane Silber.

This campaign will only receive funds if at least $32,000,000 is raised by Wed 21 Aug 11:59PM PT.
    Still $28,000,000 to go...

    Another Update This Morning:

    Hi everyone
The last few days have been absolutely incredible -- over $3.5 million in the first 40 hours. We’ve broken records, we’ve attracted the attention of the world, and we’re marching closer and closer to bringing the Ubuntu Edge to life. $32 million is a huge number, and we’ve never danced around this fact. To get there, we’re going to need your help to bring family, friends, fans, and followers to the campaign.
This crowdfunding process has already provided us with a lot of great feedback, especially about our perks -- and we’ve been listening to it all. You told us you want more opportunities to get the Ubuntu Edge at a lower contribution level, so we went back to our spreadsheets and came up with a solution. Today we’re changing our perk levels. We’ll offer a limited number of phones at each level, and as each tier runs out the next ones will be made available, so act quickly to get the best deal!
You’ll only see the first few levels on the campaign page today, but continuing our habit of openness and transparency we want to share the whole plan with you.
Hundreds of you have already contributed $830 for an Ubuntu Edge, but don’t worry. We’ll refund the difference at the end of the campaign so you won’t lose out. We’ll contact you all directly with more information.
We need to keep the campaign momentum going. Please help by sharing the news and, of course, keep pledging!

They've got it right, they are being proactive and adjusting their campaign as they go along. Clever!

They are now at $4,165,421 pledged.

Interesting, they just announced a Referral Contest. I haven't seen this approach in Crowdfunding yet:

    Hi everyone

So many of you have been busy spreading the word that we’ve passed the $6 million mark already. To keep that momentum going, we want to give you a special incentive.

Welcome to the Ubuntu Edge Referral Contest!

Whether you’ve contributed $20 or $2,000, you all have the chance to win something extra special: a personalised Ubuntu Edge phone engraved with your name.

Of course, for this prize to exist the campaign has to hit its target, so here’s what we want you to do.

    HOW TO ENTER

    1) Make sure you’re logged in to Indiegogo.

    2) Get your unique “Share This Campaign” link from the Ubuntu Edge page (just below the video), and share it via social media, email or any other method you can think of. Click the Embed and Email buttons for simple instructions to add an Ubuntu Edge widget to your website or email signature.

    3) Every time someone clicks your link or widget and then contributes money to the campaign, you’ve made a successful referral.

    THE RULES

You have one week. The person who drives the most money in referral contributions between now and 4.00pm BST on Friday 2 August will win this great prize. (Prize is conditional on the Ubuntu Edge being fully funded.)

Every extra backer takes us closer to our goal, and by taking part you’ll be playing a vital role in getting the Ubuntu Edge made.

    Thanks and good luck!

Neat idea, I like it. I suspect others might jump on this way to raise more funds and spread the message.
